Insulation Materials for New Build Projects

As a builder or contractor, you understand the importance of insulation. There are a lot of details that go into insulating a new home or building being constructed—such as the materials used, the R-value, proper install techniques and more. The material is one of the most significant factors.

There are several different types of insulation that can be used in new construction projects. The insulation company you work with will be able to handle all these specifics and help you seamlessly finish without a hitch, but it can still be helpful to know some information as you start your project and start contacting insulation companies.

Types of Insulation for New Construction

Some of the most common new insulation types include:

  • Rigid foam: Mainly used for new construction projects, rigid foam (or rigid board) is a great solution for maximizing the energy efficiency of a space right from the get-go. We install Thermax Insulation Board. Sturdy and water vapor-resistant, this product delivers excellent performance with low thickness. Designed for exposed interior applications to withstand light to moderate impact, it is intended as an insulation interior finish system for metal and wood post frames as well as concrete and masonry buildings in manufacturing, cold storage, agricultural and other applications as governed by building codes.
  • Rockwool: Made of rocks and minerals spun into small, high temperature-resistant fibers, rockwool (or slag wool) insulation is used for a variety of applications. Typically blown in, it not only is thermally efficient but can also help provide soundproofing. Rockwool insulation’s fibrous structure offers flexibility that isn’t found in other materials and may be required for a particular project.
  • Fiberglass: Fiberglass insulation has been used as an insulator for decades and is one of the most commonly installed materials. It is mostly composed of natural ingredients such as sand and recycled glass products (windows, bottles, etc.). The ingredients are melted and spun to create tiny strands of fiberglass. We install both blown-in and batt insulation.
  • Spray foam: Another popular insulation material, spray foam is used in a variety of new build projects. It is applied wet and expands into thick foam that fits snugly in wall cavities, crevices and gaps—therefore, it can be installed in hard-to-reach areas and around piping and wiring. Open-cell and closed-cell spray foam is available.
  • Cellulose: If there are eco-friendly requirements or higher green standards for your project, you may need to install cellulose. Consisting of up to 80 percent recycled content and requiring less energy to make than other materials, it is one of the most environmentally friendly insulation materials available.
